Fresh Food in Connecticut, October I
Dear Mad Hatters,
The weather is changing as quickly as the leaves are falling and we are getting close to the end of our season. But with one last pick-up left for our CSA members and a few more weeks of farmers markets, there is still lots of fresh food in Connecticut!
We are in the middle of watching a fascinating documentary called “The Last Beekeeper” in which three commercial beekeepers are profiled over the course of a year, during which they must contend with Colony Collapse Disorder, the name used to describe the mysterious mass die-off of honeybees. It is another one of those movies that gives a startling glimpse of how intertwined our food system is with nature, and how we are potentially mishandling nature with devastating effects. If you are interested in learning more about honey bees and the important role they play in our ecosystem, we encourage you to see this film.
Up here in the hills, the bees are looking for sunny spots to keep warm, and so is our dog! By next week, we are forecast for overnight lows in the freezing digits, so while we expect to have produce at the remaining markets, this Friday (tomorrow) in Ridgefield might be our last big showing. Even though the weather may not be the best tomorrow, I hope you will all make your way to the market to enjoy the last of the best of what the season has to offer. There is still great variety and delicious tasty things to eat. This week at the Ridgefield Farmers Market (Fridays 3:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.), Mad Hatter Farm will have:
· Gourmet Lettuce Mix
· Batavian Head Lettuce
· Arugula
· Brussel Sprouts
· Swiss Chard
· Red Russian Kale
· Radicchio
· Carrots
· Radish
· Leeks
· Sweet Peppers
· Winter Squash
· Onions
· Garlic
· Bok Choy
· And More…
See you soon!
