Good Eating in Connecticut, October II
Dear Mad Hatters,
We apologize for being out of touch. One of us had the flu and the other one of us has one hand in a cast which slowed us down a bit.
Lots of interesting things going on these last few weeks. I was shocked to hear that Conde Nast has pulled the plug on Gourmet Magazine. The November 2009 issue is the last one, and Editor In Chief Ruth Reichl makes an interesting comment in her editorial,
"We are in the midst of a great cooking revolution, one that has happened so gradually that few of us are even aware of it. Ten years ago the word sustainability was not even on most people's radar; today it is a serious consideration of every conscientious cook. We are asking where our food comes from and how it was raised. We are thinking about the health effects of everything we eat. Thanks to the farmers market movement, we are also eating a much wider range of produce, fish, and meats than ever before...".
The "farmers market movement"!!! I love it!
If you like reading foodie/travel books, Ruth Reichl has written a few fun ones, so check her out on Amazon.com.
Also this past month Connecticut author Billy Steers has come out with a new book in his famous children's Tractor Mac series titled Tractor Mac - Farmer's Market. The book was launched as part of a fund raiser for New Milford Hospital's Plow-to-Plate program. For more information, visit their website.
This week is the last Ridgefield Farmers Market of the year (this Friday from 3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.). It has been one crazy season and we appreciate your coming along for the ride. We will spend the next month hammering out details of our 2010 CSA (waiting list sign-up currently available on our website www.madhatterfarm.com), and will send out an e-mail with details when they become available.
This week at the Ridgefield Farmers Market, Mad Hatter Farm will have:
- Gourmet Lettuce Mix
- Arugula
- Batavian Head Lettuce
- Danvers and Cosmic Purple Carrots
- Beets
- French Breakfast Radish
- Kohlrabi
- Bok Choy
- Chinese Cabbage
- Green Onions
- Yellow and Red Onions

As we put the farm to bed for the winter, we want to THANK YOU for being part of a special community of people who strive to support sustainably-grown, high quality foods, and preservation of beautiful Connecticut farm land.
See you soon!
