Hello Mad Hatters,
Well, the last market has finally arrived. It has been a great first season and Jeff and I are really excited about all that we've accomplished in our first year of farming and all that we have planned for next year. We may periodically send you an e-mail during the off-season. We are working out the details of our 2009 CSA and do plan on having a Ridgefield pick-up location, so if you are interested, please send us an e-mail or call. We also hope to have our website up and running in the coming months, so check in every now and then at www.madhatterfarm.com.
Jeff and I were just talking about what food and farm related things were on our minds this week and, to keep us from going too far off on a tangent, we wanted to make some recommendations for those of you interested in food and its social, environmental and global impact. Check out the September 2008 "National Geographic" magazine which has a fascinating article about dirt, and how its erosion is leading to starvation. And from Netflix this week we've got "King Corn," a movie about the U.S. corn industry, modern farming, government subsidies and where it is leading us. And if you haven't already, read some Michael Pollan (The Omnivore's Dilemma or In Defense of Food). A little food for our brains in the off-season!
This week Mad Hatter Farm will have:
Beautiful Lettuce Mix
Spicy Asian greens Mix
Arugula
Spinach (new this week)
Cardinale Head Lettuce (It is back just in time for you Cardinale fans)
Carrots (2 different varieties)
Beets
Radishes
Peppers: Green, Red, Chocolate, Jalapeno, Habanero
Rosita Eggplant
Leeks
Green Beans (yes, we have them this week)
Buttercup Winter Squash
And the kitchen sink (hey, if its in the field, its coming to market)
Hope to see you all at tomorrow's final market, rain or shine. Thank you for your support!
Remember to eat your veggies!
Alix and Jeff
p.s. Jeff will be on his own tomorrow, as I am as big as a house and due to give birth any day now, so take pity on him and buy everything we have so he doesn't have to pack anything up to bring home!
