Straight from the Farm in Connecticut, August I
Dear Mad Hatters,
August is finally here, and with it, we hope, a change in the weather pattern. The weather has taken its toll on the farm, with the loss of the tomatoes and other crop damage, but we are always optimistic and choose to enjoy the bounty of what we have - fresh zucchini, radishes, green beans, carrots, eggplants and greens - how can you go wrong!
Both of my darling children have been home sick from daycare in the last two weeks, and they reminded me how different thing's can be from a child's perspective. What for me started out as a "bad" situation - sick kids, work to be done, etc. - turned out to be a stress-relieving great day. First, we picked some wild flowers: Queen Anne's Lace, cone flowers, clovers. Then we tried to feed the flowers to the frogs. Then we went looking for slugs. Yippee! Then ice cream with sprinkles. Then dance party in the living room. And so went the day. Almost any bad situation can be improved by ice cream with sprinkles.
At the Woodbury Farmers Market (Wednesday 3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.) and the Ridgefield Farmers Market (Fridays 3:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.), Mad Hatter Farm will have some assortment of the following:
- Gourmet Lettuce Mix
- Arugula
- Mizuna Greens Mix
- Green Beans
- Cucumbers (slicing and pickling)
- Zucchinis
- Radish
- Beets
- Eggplant
- Basil
- Carrots
- Tomatoes (whatever we can salvage from the field)
"If I had influence with the good fairy who is supposed to preside over the christening of all children, I should ask that her gift to each child in the world be a sense of wonder so indestructible that it would last throughout life." - Rachel Carson
-->See you soon,
