What is Community Supported Agriculture?

CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture.  This is an arrangement where individuals buy into a farmers' harvest at the start of the growing season and in exchange receive a share of the harvest.  Shares are distributed each week throughout the season.

As a member of a CSA, you are joining a community of farmers and consumers committed to healthy food, a "green" environment, sustainable local farms and a more resilient local economy.

Why Join Mad Hatter Farm CSA?

  • Enjoy fresh locally grown Connecticut vegetables, carefully selected varieties and sustainable growing practices that bring out the very best in flavor
  • Everything grown on the farm is free of synthetic pesticides, fertilizers and herbicides
  • Benefits include weekly newsletter full of farm news, sustainable agriculture and green living information

How Does Mad Hatter Farm CSA Work?

The CSA season is approximately 18 weeks long from early June to October.  Each week the CSA Member will pick up their "share" which will include a selection of freshly harvested produce.  Each season we grow over 50 different varieties of vegetables and fruits.  CSA Members will receive favorites such as heirloom tomatoes, lettuces, carrots, squash and cucumbers, as well as a selection of more unusual vegetables such as brussel sprouts and spicy Asian greens.

Generally shares are lighter early in the season as crops are still growing and getting bigger.  By midsummer, shares are abundant and diverse.  Keep in mind that by joining a CSA you take on the same risk and reward that the farmer does, with the possibility of a bumper crop or a total crop failure.

What size share does my household need?

  • Full Share:  Appropriate for a household of 2-4 people who enjoy cooking and eating at home.
  • Half Share:  Appropriate for 1-2 people, literally half as big as a full share.  Keep in mind some items (a melon, for example) cannot be halved and may be omitted or substituted for your weekly share.

Pick-up Locations

Shares are available for pick-up at the Farm on Wednesdays from 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m., or at the Ridgefield (CT) Farmers Market on Fridays from 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m..  There is also CSA pick-up at Temple Sharaay Tefila in Bedford, NY, for Temple Members, time TBD.
